Straw Bale Construction Intensive Workshop

Straw bale building continues to be one of the key sustainable building technologies, where high environmental performance meets code-ready, accessible and affordable technology. Straw bales can create beautiful, energy-efficient homes that are light on the environment and invite owner-builder participation in the process.

This four-day straw bale construction intensive workshop is taught by three leading practitioners of straw bale building in Ontario, with almost 50 years of combined experience. They have designed this workshop to give you the most practical and up-to-date information about building with straw bales.

Over the four days, participants will learn about straw building theory and design in two classroom sessions, and get plenty of practical, hands-on learning experience on a code-approved straw bale building.

• Ecological and health impacts of straw bale building
• Design basics for straw buildings
• How to find and select bales
• Different ways of using straw bales and incorporating them into different framing systems
• How to properly detail a straw bale wall to be air tight and energy efficient
